My name is Kathie Kern. I was born and raised in Michigan and moved to Florida with my husband and two children in 1978. I have loved dolls since I was a little girl.
My mother taught me to sew when I was 8 years old and I have been making dolls and sewing clothes since then. As I got older, I started sewing for myself, but when my daughter was born my real love for sewing was making baby clothes.
I was first introduced to doll making by a friend who made porcelain dolls. I thought I was in heaven making all those beautiful babies. I made porcelain dolls for 14 years, then I saw reborn baby dolls in Doll Crafter Magazine. I thought how could anyone buy a vinyl doll over porcelain? It took me a couple of years before I saw reborn dolls at a doll show and fell in love with them. That's when I knew I just had to give it a try. I didn't have a clue what I was doing because it was so different from painting on porcelain, but after reading many articles and tutorials I got my first baby and started following my notes. To my surprise it was pretty good for a first baby. That was it; I absolutely love making these adorable lifelike dolls , and with every new baby, that love hasn't stopped. I am now one of the nation's premier doll artists making reborn dolls that look and feel incredibly real. Sometimes while holding them, you go back in time when you were a little girl or to when you had your own little babies. I just love seeing the faces of the new mommy when they get their precious reborn baby!
I hope you enjoy my babies as much as I enjoy bringing them to life.
